Engagement metrics help you understand how visitors interact with your site beyond just loading it. These signals reveal how effectively your content captures attention, encourages interaction, and keep users involved.
What is zoom out rate?
Zoom out rate measures the percentage of pageviews where users manually zoom out - reducing the size of the content to see more of the page at once. It can signal attempts to fix layout issues, read dense content, or regain control of the viewing experience.
How is it measured?
We detect zooming behavior by tracking changes to the browser’s zoom level or viewport scale. If a user decreases the zoom level during a pageview, that view is counted as a “zoomed out” session. The zoom out rate is calculated by dividing zoomed-out pageviews by total pageviews and multiplying by 100.
Why it matters?
A higher zoom out rate may indicate that users feel overwhelmed by dense content, unclear spacing, or broken responsive layouts - especially on mobile. It may also reflect frustration with unexpected layout shifts or elements overflowing off-screen. While occasional zooming is normal, persistent zooming out is often a sign that your design or content needs rethinking. Monitoring this rate helps you identify UX and performance issues that push users to compensate manually.
