What is CLS by funnel point

The CLS by funnel point breaks down your Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) by major user journey events, called funnel points. In most cases, funnel points are automatically populated by Uxify for each site, but they can be edited from the Settings menu if you want to add or remove any. Funnel points represent crucial steps in the user journey and need to be well-optimized.

CLS is a key Core Web Vital that measures unexpected layout shifts during page load. A poor CLS at any funnel point can disrupt the user experience and increase the likelihood of abandonment.

Funnel points are essential milestones on the user’s path toward conversion. For example, in an e-commerce site, these might include Home, Product, Cart, and Checkout pages. A funnel point with high CLS indicates unstable layout behavior, which is often correlated with user frustration or early exits.

Should you worry

A healthy CLS by funnel point breakdown shows all green bars. Some funnel points may be greener than others, but as long as none fall into the yellow or red zones, the visual stability across the journey is considered solid. The greener the funnel point, the better the layout stability.

Unhealthy CLS by funnel point

In the example below, the CLS by funnel point reveals that Product, Collection and Home pages show unhealthy real user CLS values, whereas the Account funnel point is healthy.

Resolving unhealthy CLS by funnel point

Go-to action plan to resolve an unhealthy CLS by funnel point:

  1. Ask Uxi to analyze your CLS by funnel point values and suggest improvements.

  2. Use Filters to narrow down high-CLS segments, then cross-reference with other CLS breakdowns to identify which pages have the most impact.

  3. Simulate CLS of the suspected breakdown to see if fixing it will resolve the CLS distribution. If yes, this is where the resolution focus should be.

  4. Use an automated CLS optimization tool like Navigation AI to improve your CLS by funnel point values.

  5. Once you’ve improved CLS, set an alert to be the first to know if it starts worsening again.
