What is CLS by pageview type
CLS by pageview type shows Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) value across two different pageview types:
First in session pageviews – these are the first pageviews of each user session
Subsequent in session pageviews – all other pageviews in the same session
This lens helps you spot whether layout shifts are more common during first-time visits or as users continue browsing. It’s crucial for understanding how consistent and stable the visual experience is throughout the user journey.
Only pageviews recorded during the selected period are included.
Healthy CLS by pageview type sample
A healthy CLS by pageview type lens shows both pageview types in green. Even if one has slightly better numbers, the absence of yellow or red means your layout is stable for both new and returning visitors.
Unhealthy CLS by pageview type sample
In an unhealthy setup, First in session pageviews often show worse CLS. This is problematic because the first impression sets the tone — unexpected layout shifts can frustrate users and increase bounce rates before they’ve had a chance to engage.
Resolving unhealthy CLS by pageview type
Go-to action plan to resolve an unhealthy CLS by pageview type:
Ask Uxi to analyze your CLS by pageview type values and suggest improvements
Use Filters to isolate first-pageviews and cross-reference with other lenses (e.g., browser, device type, cookies)
Simulate CLS of the suspected lens to see if fixing it will resolve the CLS by pageview type. If yes, this is where the resolution focus should be.
Use an automated CLS optimization tool like Navigation AI to improve your CLS by pageview type values
Once you’ve improved CLS, set an alert to be the first to know if it starts worsening again.
