What is CLS by navigation type
CLS by navigation type shows Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) value across different navigation types (e.g. Back-forward, Prerender, Navigate). This lens helps you understand if layout shifts happen more often during certain types of visits.
Only navigation types that occurred during the selected period are shown.
Some navigation types like Navigate (full page load) tend to have higher CLS risk due to dynamic content, ads, or font swapping. Others like Prerender often have lower CLS due to improved readiness.
Healthy CLS by navigation type sample
A healthy CLS by navigation type lens looks all green. Variation is expected, but yellow or red values suggest layout instability during specific navigation types.
Unhealthy CLS by navigation type sample
In the example below, the Navigate type and Prerender show high CLS while Back-forward is stable. This may affect first impressions, especially from paid ads or social traffic.
Resolving unhealthy CLS by navigation type
Go-to action plan to resolve an unhealthy CLS by navigation type:
Ask Uxi to analyze your CLS by navigation type values and suggest improvements
Use Filters to isolate Navigate sessions, then check other CLS lenses (like page or device) to trace patterns.
Simulate CLS of the suspected lens to see if fixing it will resolve the CLS by navigation type. If yes, this is where the resolution focus should be.
Use an automated CLS optimization tool like Navigation AI to improve your CLS by navigation type values
Once you’ve improved CLS, set an alert to be the first to know if it starts worsening again.
