What is CLS by checkpoint
The CLS by checkpoint lens breaks down your Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) by major user journey events, called checkpoints. In most cases, checkpoints are automatically populated by Uxify for each site, but they can be edited from the Settings menu if you want to add or remove any. Checkpoints represent crucial steps in the user journey and need to be well-optimized.
CLS is a key Core Web Vital that measures unexpected layout shifts during page load. A poor CLS at any checkpoint can disrupt the user experience and increase the likelihood of abandonment.
Checkpoints are essential milestones on the user’s path toward conversion. For example, in an e-commerce site, these might include Home, Product, Cart, and Checkout pages. A checkpoint with high CLS indicates unstable layout behavior, which is often correlated with user frustration or early exits.
Healthy CLS by checkpoint sample
Should you worry
A healthy CLS by checkpoint lens shows all green bars. Some checkpoints may be greener than others, but as long as none fall into the yellow or red zones, the visual stability across the journey is considered solid. The greener the checkpoint, the better the layout stability.
Unhealthy CLS by checkpoint sample
In the example below, the CLS by checkpoint reveals that Product, Collection and Home pages show unhealthy real user CLS values, whereas the Account checkpoint is healthy.
Resolving unhealthy CLS by checkpoint
Go-to action plan to resolve an unhealthy CLS by checkpoint:
Ask Uxi to analyze your CLS by checkpoint values and suggest improvements.
Use Filters to narrow down high-CLS segments, then cross-reference with other CLS lenses to identify which pages have the most impact.
Simulate CLS of the suspected lens to see if fixing it will resolve the CLS distribution. If yes, this is where the resolution focus should be.
Use an automated CLS optimization tool like Navigation AI to improve your CLS by checkpoint values.
Once you’ve improved CLS, set an alert to be the first to know if it starts worsening again.
