What is LCP by CLS

LCP by CLS shows the Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) value based on the layout stability of the page - measured by Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS).

This lens helps you understand whether unstable layouts are hurting the speed of largest element.

Should you worry

A healthy LCP by CLS lens shows Good CLS paired with fast LCP. This means your content loads quickly and stays visually stable - no unexpected shifts, no bouncing buttons, no disappearing text.

When users don’t have to fight to keep their eyes (or fingers) on target, the experience feels smooth and intentional. Pages with Good CLS tend to support faster reading, better interaction, and higher trust in the interface.

Unhealthy LCP by CLS sample

When CLS is poor, even a fast LCP can feel jarring. Some common patterns:

  • Good LCP but Poor CLS: The main content loads quickly, but things shift after it renders — from fonts, ads, or late-loading assets. This undermines the experience and makes interactions harder.

  • Poor LCP and Poor CLS: A worst-case combo. The content takes long to appear and jumps around once it does. This frustrates users, especially on mobile.

Pages that are visually unstable often cause users to pause, correct, or abandon — increasing bounce rates and reducing engagement.

Resolving unhealthy LCP by CLS

Go-to action plan to resolve an unhealthy LCP by CLS:

  1. Ask Uxi to analyze your LCP by CLS values and suggest improvements.

  2. Use Filters to zoom in on Poor CLS sessions, then explore other LCP lenses (e.g. by element type or page template) to find recurring issues.

  3. Simulate LCP of the suspected lens to see if fixing it will resolve the slow LCP by CLS. If yes, this is where the resolution focus should be.

  4. Use an automated LCP optimization tool like Navigation AI to improve your LCP by CLS values.

  5. Once you’ve improved LCP, set an alert to be the first to know if it starts worsening again.
